In an interview nearing her 85th birthday at her Harlem home, Dr. Maya Angelou was interviewed by Time in 2013. When asked whether she had any unfinished business as she approached so many years of living, Dr. Angelou responded:
Yes. I still have not written as well as I want to write. I want to write so that the reader in Des Moines, Iowa, in Kowloon, China, Capetown, Pretoria in South Africa and Harlem and Boston…I want to write so that the reader can say, “You know that’s the truth. That’s the truth, yeah. I wasn’t there and I wasn’t a 6 foot tall black girl. But that’s the truth. That’s human.”
This resonates with me and adequately describes my sentiments concerning making an impact. It’s beautiful to hear someone who has accomplished so much say that they have not (you fill in the blank) as well as they want or to their highest capacity.
And so I want to say to you, Dr. Maya, about your life and the consciousness you have raised in me: You know that’s the truth. That’s human!
